With the World Cup underway, there is excitement across the District as schools cheer on Team Canada and former 91×ÊÔ´È«¼¯ Central Secondary student and national team player Alphonso Davies. There is much to celebrate at his former school, as the next generation of female student athletes are also making their mark on the international stage.
Back when he was a student in 91×ÊÔ´È«¼¯, Davies was part of the soccer academy at Central put on in partnership with Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Since 2018, the focus of the partnership has shifted to the , which is one of many sports academies and Programs of Choice offered at the District.
Last month, several of the academy’s current student athletes at Central attended the U17 World Cup in India. Congratulations to Mya Archibald, Jeneva Hernandez Gray, Anna Hauer, Clare Logan, Iba Oching, Jaime Perrault, Ashley Roberts and Emily Wong.
And this month, during the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 University Signing Day, the Whitecaps FC academy girls from Central were one of North America’s top recruiting classes. The following student athletes were cumulatively awarded a total of $1.9 million in four-year scholarships:
- Mya Archibald – University of Illinois
- Anna Hauer – University of Memphis
- Nyema Ingleton – West Virginia University
- Ava Jackson – University of Arkansas
- Clare Logan – University of Notre Dame
- Sonya Mehta – University of Iowa
- Ire Omotayo – Villanova University
