Across the District there are many examples of students leveraging technology, getting creative, sharing their skills with one another and even winning awards. Below are just some examples of students creating, exploring and learning with technology.
District Robotics Team to Compete at the World Championship
Students from the District’s Robotics (Mechatronics) Program are competing at the VEX Robotics World Championships next month in Texas. The Grade 10 students from Alpha and Cariboo Hill Secondary schools are part of the Program of Choice held at Alpha. The team will compete in Dallas with more than 5000 teams from 50 countries. Three of the eight Robotics teams that are part of the District program qualified for Provincials this year, where students also won the Amaze and Judge’s awards.
Mentoring and Creating with Technology
Grade 5/6 students at Inman Elementary had fun replicating their school in Minecraft. At Confederation Park Elementary, students had the chance to work on coding with mentors from their catchment high school. Similarly, two Grade 6/7 classes from Maywood Community School seized the opportunity to explore technology at 91Դȫ South Secondary. The younger children worked with Media Arts students while filming and editing. They used forced perspectives and green screens. At South Slope Elementary and the BC School for the Deaf, two Grade 4/5 classes also experimented with green screens while working on digital storytelling in the school library. By the end of the last school year, all elementary schools were equipped with “Creativation” tools of a green screen, tripods, and microphones for students to create digital stories.
Reaching for the Top at the Physics Olympics
A group of students from Alpha Secondary ranked 2nd place in the province at the University of British Columbia Physics Olympics in the Air Resistance Lab, and 6th place with the Marine Ambulance Pre-build Project. Every year teams from high schools across BC compete in six physics & astronomy events.
